Margaine Champagne
A Share for the Angels
The Margaine Champagne collection is a proud addition to the very fine list of champagnes Emperor Champagne has to offer. Composed mostly from a blend of predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, these champagnes are aged in barrels, where it is said that “angels will receive their share”.
The family vineyard was established in the 1920s by Bernard Margaine in the Villers-Marmery, south-west of Montagne de Reims. He and his family have been growing Chardonnay for several decades, with a present vine age of approximately 32 years.
The vineyard is located on a 6.5 hectares family estate, in an area that is surrounded predominantly by Pinot Noir. This marooning of the Chardonnay in a sea of Pinot Noir creates Chardonnay vines with a higher mineral content than usual.
A Surprise With Every Bottle
The Margaine vineyard is currently run by Arnaud Margaine, who took over from his father in 1989. Arnaud is as unconventional as any creator must be and enjoys trying out new ideas both in the vineyards and in the cellars.
He prefers not to ferment most his champagnes malolactically, in order to retain their fruity flavour and freshness. Arnaud also tries out new ideas with ageing. One of his signature styles is to age his wines in a barrel, with about 20% being fermented using the that method to create balance in the cuvées.
The use of oak barrelled dosing liquor introduces extra character to his champagnes. Another signature style of the Margaine champagnes is in the blending process, where they typically use a large quantity of reserve wines. Rather than keeping them in vats, a portion of these are bottled.
Arnaud Margaine champagnes are composed mainly of Chardonnay that carry a light and fruity flavour, while the Pinot Noir adds complexity, to create full-bodied and flowery champagnes that tend to lean towards a more feminine character overall.
The champagnes produced by the Margaine Champagne house do not lack variance in taste and texture and undeniably create a unique flavour in every bottle.
The Margaine Champagne Collection
Margaine champagnes although not as well-established as some of the older champagne houses have nevertheless been creating a stir. They produce the following:
Gross - A Blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir
Extra-Brut - Blend : 100% Chardonnay
Assembly Rosé - Blend : 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir
Rose Of Saignée (Vintage) - Blend : 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay
Special Club - 100% Chardonnay
Magnum Vintage - 100% Chardonnay, Vintage 2009
Red Champenois Hills - Blend : Pinot Noir
Ratafia Champenois - Blend : Pinot Noir juice
Fine Champenoise - Eau de vie - distillation of Chardonnay wines
Champagne A. Margaine - Chardonnay 90%, Pinot Noir 10%.
Emperor Champagne is pleased to support Margaine and other fine champagne houses.

Well the chardonnay used by Margaine in Villers Marmery is specific to this area and cannot be found anywhere else in champagne. This immediately stands out as an identity that Arnaud wants to preserve which is present in the Margaine cuvées. His approach to making his champagne is to assess each year as it presents itself as opposed to a pre-determined recipe. Using a prescribed approach is restrictive to the true nature of the wine.
