The house started out making still red wines in the former winemaking capital of Champagne, Aÿ and for many years resisted the sweeping sensation of making sparkling wine. The house to this day is focused on making it wine first before a champagne. This is in direct contrast to other houses that make acidic base wines purely for the purpose of making champagne. One of the key winemaking techniques is the absence of malo-lactic fermentation. This preserves the pristine nature of the fruit and highlights its lively acidity and bracing energy. The wines therefore, benefit from an extended time in the cellar to gain their full potential. They would certainly have the potential to develop in yours. We have been impressed by all the cuvées, which recently arrived in Australia (September 2017) and the Grande Reserve Brut is an outstanding entry level champagne for a classy producer.

Food Suggestion

This is a rich, complex yet fresh and vibrant wine, serve with pork and pistachio terrine or a pâte with fresh raspberries and red apple. Pol Roger is of the few champagne houses that have rightfully earned the British coat of arms to adorn every bottle and after all, it’s not just a favourite with the Royal Family but most of Britain, who know good champagne from the average. This medium-sized, family owned treasure of the Champagne region is the epitome of quality and consistency. With deep cool cellars, this maison leaves their cuvées ageing for far longer than most of their counterparts allowing the development of very fine and tiny bubbles. This medium-sized, family owned treasure of the Champagne region is the epitome of quality and consistency. With deep cool cellars, this maison leaves their cuvées ageing for far longer than most of their counterparts allowing the development of very fine and tiny bubbles. This creates a silky texture on the palate with subtle toasty notes that are the hallmark of excellent champagne. Philipponnat is a house of outstanding quality from their entry level Royale Reserve Brut all the way through to their iconic Clos des Goisses vintages. This premium producer picks fruit with maximum ripeness and focus on pinot noir fruit with power. All this ripeness is balanced with a long, cool fermentation and some wines being blocked from malolactic fermentation whilst being fermented in oak barrels. Carefully blending of base wines complete the work of art on non-vintage cuvée's with approximately 30% of reserve wines being added.

Reserve wines are aged in a perpetual solera system with new wines being added to older wines every year continuously adding more complexity and depth to young cuvée's .

Food suggestion

Your are in aperitif country here so simple food pairings with charcuterie and light cheeses with fresh summer fruits.

Reviews

95 / 100

"I have long loved Royale Réserve, revelling in the full depth of Mareuil pinot and all the theatrics of partial barrel fermentation, ever a reliable and affordable go-to. Never has it looked as dashingly gorgeous as it does today. Radiating through its pretty, pale-straw hue, this is a fresh and lively expression of the delightful, deep red and black cherry fruits of pinot noir from the south-facing slopes of the Montagne de Reims. Carefully blending of base wines complete the work of art on non-vintage cuvees with approximately 30% of reserve wines being added.

Reserve wines are aged in a perpetual solera system with new wines being added to older wines every year continuously adding more complexity and depth to young cuvees.

It captures the essence of Philipponnat in contrasting rich, ripe fruit with tension and poise. From us, to you
Wine, in all of its many different forms and varieties, has been noted since ancient times for its uniquely versatile and charming set of properties and characteristics. More so than perhaps any other drink, wine captures the spirit, the way of life and the culture of the place which produces it. And there is perhaps no wine more complex and difficult to produce, or more inextricably bound to the climate and the conditions of the particular region from which it originates, than champagne.
The planting of vines and the production of wine has traditionally had a unique place at the heart of whole communities, signalling a sense of permanence and an attachment to a particular location, and in so doing becoming an enduring source of local pride. When you choose to buy a bottle of quality champagne, you are not simply purchasing a beverage for consumption, but accepting an invitation to go on a journey back into the far, sleepy wine-country from which the bottle originally came, complete with a subtle and intuitive, sensory experience of the weather, the landscape and the industry involved in its production.
Here at Emperor, we’re acutely aware of the fact that many people all across Australia share our passion for quality champagnes, and we’re also aware of the frustrating reality which faces far too many of our fellow enthusiasts, concerning just how difficult and expensive it can be to access new and innovative top-quality champagnes in the Australian market.
