Cédric Moussé -
While Pinot Meunier can struggle to be taken seriously in Champagne, at Moussé, Pinot Meunier is celebrated. In fact, their house motto is “profondement meunier,” which translates as “deeply meunier" and 80% of the vines planted are Meunier. The varietal thrives on the fertile soils in the vineyards Moussé owns or controls at the western end of the Montagne de Reims (black clay over green clay over mixed clay and sand over Champenoise chalk). With a winemaking approach that combines elements like low dosage and stainless steel fermentation, this grape is allowed to truly shine.
Champagne Moussé Fils was founded in 1923 by Eugène Moussé. His great grandson Cédric is head winemaker and is crafting wines that are coveted worldwide. He is a dynamic, young winemaker with the skills, personality and attention to detail that make for exception wines that we can't stop raving about at Emperor!
This agency is the first member of Club Trésors de Champagne to make a Spécial Club wine of 100% Pinot Meunier and the first Club member to produce a Rosé de Saignée Spécial Club.
In the vineyards, Cédric Moussé adheres to a ‘lutte raisonée’ approach. He practices organic viticulture, using herbal infusions that act as ‘vitamins’ for the vines, cover crops, zero pesticides, and minimal doses of heavy metals like copper.
Moussé works almost exclusively in stainless steel, with the exception of a small amount of Pinot Meunier destined for his rosé. All cuvées undergo malolactic fermentation. Read our interview with Cedric Moussé on the Emperor blog.
