Mailly Grand Cru: A Century of Craft and Character
There are certain Champagne houses that take your breath away — not just for their wines, but for the integrity and artistry behind every bottle. Champagne Mailly Grand Cru is one of them.
For the very first time, this iconic Grand Cru house has arrived in Australia, and we at Emperor are honoured to introduce it to our community.
A Village Like No Other
In the heart of the Montagne de Reims lies the village of Mailly — a name revered by champagne lovers and insiders alike. It’s one of only 17 villages in all of Champagne to hold Grand Cru status, a distinction that signifies the pinnacle of terroir and tradition.
But what makes Mailly truly special isn’t just its soils — it’s the people. Founded in 1929 by 25 visionary growers, Champagne Mailly was born from a spirit of unity and resilience. Through economic hardship and world wars, these families banded together to preserve their vineyards and craft wines that would reflect their home’s unique story.
Today, the house is still independently owned by 29 families — a rare cooperative where passion, craftsmanship, and pride remain the beating heart of every vintage.
From Earth to Elegance
Mailly’s vineyards stretch across 70 hectares, each parcel meticulously cared for and uniquely positioned. Unlike most Champagne villages, Mailly’s vines face all four directions — North, South, East, and West — capturing a stunning diversity of microclimates. This creates champagnes of profound depth and balance, uniting tension and richness in perfect harmony.
Every step of production happens within the village itself — from harvest to vinification to ageing — ensuring a pure expression of place. The grapes descend by gravity into the cool cellars below, where the wines slowly evolve in stainless steel, oak, and centuries-old chalk tunnels.
Each cuvée — from the radiant Brut Réserve to the textured Blanc de Pinot Noir and the breathtaking L’Intemporelle 2017 — tells the story of patience and precision. These are champagnes of clarity, confidence, and unmistakable character.
The Art of Mailly
To understand Mailly is to understand that craftsmanship can also be an art form.
Their visual identity is unlike any other in Champagne — blending photography with hand-drawn sketches that trace the contours of vineyard rows, grape clusters, and cellar doors. This distinctive style mirrors the philosophy behind the wines themselves: a fusion of tradition and innovation, precision and poetry.
Each image feels alive — much like their champagnes, which dance between structure and lightness, power and elegance.
Certified B Corp — A Responsible Future
In 2024, Champagne Mailly Grand Cru became one of the very few Champagne houses to achieve B Corp certification — a recognition reserved for businesses that meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance.
This isn’t a marketing move; it’s a continuation of their core values. The team at Mailly has long practiced sustainable viticulture, championed biodiversity, and prioritized the wellbeing of the families who make up their cooperative. B Corp certification simply formalizes what they’ve always believed: that excellence must be ethical.
Their guiding principle, “Clarity, Cru, and Conscience,” captures it beautifully — crafting extraordinary champagne while caring deeply for the people and planet that make it possible.

"96 Points Light, bright straw with a brassy tinge. The bouquet is fresh and nutty, toasty, straw-like, fresh and ripe smelling, with traces of quince, red apple and pomegranate. The wine is rich and full in the mouth with real depth of ripe fruit, great structure too, the well judged hint of liqueur doing its thing in the middle palate and the finish long and satisfying. The aftertaste is clean, dry and appetising. A very smart wine indeed." Huon Hooke
"Light-mid straw yellow hue; the bouquet is meringue, red fruits/strawberry, very pinoty, but also clean, fresh, ripe and inviting. In the mouth it’s rich and ample, with generous flavour, round shape and lovely balance, the finish soft and appetising, more-ish and long. Smart pinot driven Champagne." Huon Hooke
"Light-mid straw colour with a complex, nutty/toasty lees-aged bouquet, savoury and toasted-nutty suggesting there’s some barrel input. Light but intense, rich and full on the palate with a very dry Extra Brut carry. This is stylish fizz." Huon Hooke
"97 Points Light straw colour, youthful and complex, the bouquet multilayered and the palate likewise detailed and long, with refinement and cleansing dryness throughout. Hints of lemon, iced pastries and smoked charcuterie. Crisp, lively, refreshing finish that runs long. Stylish wine; a truly wonderful Champagne." Huon Hooke
