- Bold and powerful styled vintage champagne from a true artisanal producer

- Scallops in a clementine sauce

- A warm harvest in 2009 brought generosity and a full-bodied nature to this cuvee

"Like the house’s non-vintage brut, the vintage cuvée is a blend of all three varieties, in varying proportions according to the year, but often with a large percentage of chardonnay. Another contributing factor to the Gratien style is the aging of vintage wines on cork rather than capsule. “With our wines, I think the bubbles are finer [under cork], and the wine stays fresher for longer,” says Jaeger. “There’s a lower rate of oxidation with cork than capsule. It’s not really a question of what’s better, but it certainly changes the style. My father tried to put the millésime under capsule, but the wine became unrecognizable.” Since 1996, all of Gratien’s vintage wines have returned to aging under cork." Peter Liem

The nose is initially fruity and “pastry-like” with scents of peach, pear and spring flowers that blend with aromas of cream biscuits. A few seconds later, the bouquet presents a different profile with cherry, granny smith apple, brioche and a few toasted notes. After a few minutes, it veers toward a unique character offering up notes of mocha and gingerbread that herald its future development.

On the palate the wine is ample and velvety in the attack before revealing volume and a fine consistency. This full-bodied sensation is typical of the 2009 vintage. The particularly exceptional quality of the acidity gives it a light and ethereal effervescence. The whole makes for a cashmere-like texture with a lingering sense of purity.

If exceptional had a name, it would be Champagne Alfred Gratien . Alfred Gratien champagnes are handcrafted for guaranteed quality and consistency. A few miles away from Epernay’s bustling town center, deep in the heart of a Champagne vineyard, are the Alfred Gratien champagne cellars. It was here, on Rue Maurice Cerveaux, that Alfred Gratien set up his business and created his first cuvées in 1864. For over a century and a half, Alfred Gratien champagnes have remained a family affair perpetuated by the expertise and know-how of their founder.

At the table, save this wine with the noblest of dishes. It will go wonderfully with scallops in a clementine sauce, cooked oysters (Mornay or champagne sauce), veal rib with a cream sauce or pig trotters and sweetbread in puff pastry.
