Champagne Lilbert-Fils Champagne House
Champagne Lilbert-Fils
Grand Cru Chardonnay & the Chalk of the Côte des Blancs
A Cult Favourite Among Champagne Lovers
The Lilbert family has been growing vines in Champagne since 1746, making this tiny Côte des Blancs estate one with an extraordinary history. Today, Bertrand Lilbert works alongside his father, continuing generations of family winemaking from their home in the Grand Cru village of Cramant. The estate remains remarkably small, with just 8.6 acres of vines and an annual production of approximately 2,200 cases. Some vineyard parcels date back to the 1930s, while the vines average around 45 years of age — a precious resource for a producer devoted entirely to Chardonnay.
Lilbert-Fils works exclusively with Chardonnay grown across three celebrated Grand Cru villages in the northern Côte des Blancs: Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry. Cramant forms the heart of the estate, accounting for around 60% of its vineyards, followed by Chouilly and Oiry. Beneath the vines lies the region's famous Campanian chalk, which plays an important role in the distinctive style of these champagnes. Lilbert's wines are celebrated for their purity, tension and intensely chalky minerality, combining precision and structure with the finesse and elegance that make Côte des Blancs Chardonnay so captivating.
Despite its long history, Lilbert-Fils remains something of an insider's secret. Tiny production and an uncompromising focus on terroir have earned the house a devoted international following, with its champagnes frequently sought out by collectors and sommeliers. Critics including Peter Liem, William Kelley, Tom Hewson and Tyson Stelzer have praised the estate for its purity, precision, complexity and ability to age. These aren't champagnes built around power or extravagance; they are beautifully detailed expressions of Chardonnay, defined by energy, harmony and a remarkable sense of place. With so little produced each year, discovering a bottle of Lilbert-Fils feels like discovering one of Champagne's best-kept secrets.
