Based in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, Benoit is fifth generation and one of the most exciting natural producers at the moment being certified organic and biodynamic. For example he is one of very few vineyards to plough only using 2 horses since 2010. He sources fruit from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Mailly and uses a very natural approach to fermentation using only wild yeasts. He is also sulphur free and uses small 225 litre oak barriques.
Marguet Champagne, Authentic and Natural
Champagne Marguet Pere et Fils origins go back to 1875 when it was founded by Emile Marguet. They are the grower-producers for the champagne brand Marguet Champagne. Headed by Benoit Marguet who is the fifth-generation owner of this vineyard, or terroir as they are more commonly known in France, this prestigious champagne house is situated in the Ambonnay region.
What is remarkable about the Marguet Champagne is that besides the organic viniculture Benoit practices is that he ploughs his fields by horse. Officially taking over in 1999, he initially had a hard time convincing his family that they needed to make a switch to organic farming.
He was even more convinced of the necessity for this when his then two-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a type of leukaemia that is associated with chemical treatments common in the vineyards surrounding them.
One of a Handful
Producing grapes organically is not a common practice in Champagne, with just a little over 2% of the terroirs using this method of farming. It is believed to produce up to 30% less yields than chemically grown grapes.
Nevertheless, Benoit Marguet persisted, and with time, his efforts began to bear fruit. His produce was getting better and better, and he introduced minimalist techniques such as using native yeast and carrying out malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, with a slight addition of sulphur when called for.
Marguet also vinifies prized plots on their own, to develop lines of limited offerings, from single vineyards. He has developed a speciality for producing Chardonnay rosés, by injecting saignées and pinot-noir to add structure, as well as focusing on the textures and aromas as opposed to attempting to achieve a specific colour of rosé.
He has been quite successful over time, producing under 2,000 of these finer champagnes per vineyard vintage, while charging higher prices for them. However, he has no shortage of clients lining up to acquire some of his speciality champagnes.
