The grand daddy of Champagne - Krug - has well and truly earned its place as the ‘King of Champagne’ and along with this grand title, is a grand price tag.
This house is part of the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy conglomerate but is very much left alone to create the magic it does in the vineyard and cellar but with all the marketing polish that LVMH can add.
The team at Krug are fastidious, using only the best fruit parcels in their blends and vintages, with all wines being fermented in small oak barrels – a practice which is practically obsolete in Champagne.
Fermentation in oak barrel and extended ageing of the wines in the cellar after secondary fermentation provides a richness and complexity that is second to none. If you like your champagne big, bold and beautiful – this is the maison for you.
Treat yourself with this Champagne but don’t open a bottle with more than one person in tow, you wont want to share this!
Where It All Began For Krug Champagne
The Krug Champagne house is part of the Grande Marques and was founded by Joseph Krug in 1843. Krug’s extensive travels around Europe greatly enriched his knowledge of wines, and it was also on these travels that he learned about composition, taste, and criticism that enabled him to blend some of the finest tasting champagnes to be found. In 1842, Krug along with a sleeping partner Hyppolite de Vivès founded one of the most pristine champagne houses in the world.
The two Krug vintages were created during hard times. Joseph II Krug succeeded his father in 1866 and oversaw the house. In World War I, Joseph II became a prisoner of war, and his wife, Jeanne took control over the house. After the war, Joseph II had a slow recovery during which his nephew, Jean Seydoux became a joint manager in 1928 and in that decade the two vintages were created.
Krug is considered the king of champagnes because the lawyer and wine writer, Maurice Healey had a true passion for this fine tasting champagne and in 1940 he wrote the following;
“Krug holds my allegiance as the king of them all; my recollection does not go beyond the Krug 1919, but that was truly an excellent wine. And Krug 1928 must be the best wine made in the present century.”
Since founding this champagne house, the house has been passed down from generation to generation, and in 2009 Olivier Krug, the son of Henri Krug, the son of Paul Krug II, the son of Joseph II Krug, the son of founder Joseph Krug became the house director.

Emperor Champagne is a leading supplier of fine quality champagnes. Our business is also the only champagne subscription company in the country. We invest in only the finest products and Krug definitely deserves a spot on our list of available champagnes.
The Krug house features a wide variety of luxury champagnes types such as the following;
- Krug Grande Cuvée
- Krug Rose
- Krug Vintage
- Krug Clos Du Mesnil
- Krug Clos D’Ambonnay
- Krug Collection
These champagne types consist of different editions depending on the year of blending. The recreation of each edition is unique because of the natural flavour and characteristics of grapes harvested from wineries during specific years and the combination of different types of wines. Each and every one of the Krug champagnes is ultimately divine and definitely worth enjoying.
At Emperor Champagne, we currently stock on two of the leading champagnes created by the Krug house. If you need something delightful and unique to tickle your taste buds on a special occasion or are looking to add Krug to your reserves, then we highly recommend investing in the following champagnes.
Krug Grande Cuvée Prestige 163ème Édition – These fine tasting champagnes are aged for at least six years in the cellar before they are available for purchasing but about twenty years of processing is required to craft each and every bottle of Grande Cuvée. This is because the champagne is blended of more than 120 wines from 10 or more different years and the champagne is re-created each and every year.
These luxury champagnes offer profound maturity and complexity to which there is no comparison. This edition offer layers of aroma such as lemon, lemon zest, strawberries, figs, tangelos and is reminiscent of freshly tanned leather and Christmas spice. The champagne is best served in large glasses, and it is best to sip slowly so you can taste its true theatrics unfold as it warms.
Krug Grande Cuvée 166eme Edition – This Grande Cuvée offers the same ancient splendour as the 163 blends but offers a very different taste because of Krug’s habit of renewing their blends each and every edition. Most champagne lovers insist that the Grande Cuvée should be enjoyed last on the list of Krug champagne although others argue that this should be the very first one you buy due to its incredible price.
The 166eme edition is blended of 140 wines from 13 different years with the oldest wine going back as far as 1988 and the youngest from 2010. This Grande Cuvée, unlike other editions, offers a richer aroma due to the wider range of blends used.
