Egly Ouriet
Club Member Price: $1,177.05 (?)
What to expect
- A rare vintage from one of Champagne's most revered grower producers
- 100% Grand Cru fruit from Ambonnay, led by Pinot Noir
- More than eight years ageing on lees before disgorgement in July 2025
- Powerful, layered and vinous: a champagne for the table as much as the toast
About the producer
Francis Egly farms his family's vines in Ambonnay, one of the great Pinot Noir villages of the Montagne de Reims. His approach is uncompromising: old vines, low yields, fermentation in oak and long ageing in the cellar before release. The result is some of the most sought-after grower champagne in the world, made in tiny quantities and prized by sommeliers and collectors alike.
About the vintage
2016 was a challenging, low-yielding year in Champagne, which makes the finest wines from it all the more precious. In the hands of a grower like Egly, the result is concentrated and full of character. The late disgorgement means this bottle has spent more than eight years gaining depth and complexity on its lees, and it arrives with a freshness that only recent disgorgement brings.
Tasting notes
Expect a deep, golden wine with ripe red fruits and orchard fruit, layered over toasted brioche, roasted nuts and a savoury, chalky minerality. The palate is broad and structured, with the richness of oak-fermented Pinot Noir balanced by fine bubbles and a long, driving finish.
Food pairing
This is a champagne that wants food. Try it with roast chicken with morels, aged Comté, duck breast or a rich mushroom risotto.
Serving
Serve at 10–12°C in a tulip glass rather than a flute, so the wine has room to open. It's drinking beautifully now but should reward further cellaring for years to come.
