The De Sousa family are based in the Grand Cru village of Avize in the Côte Des Blancs. Father and Vigneron Erick De Sousa has a Portuguese background and practice Biodynamic viticulture -and are one of the few produces certified. Head winemaker is daughter Charlotte De Sousa.
The family estate runs just over 9 hectares, most of which in Avize but also in the Montagne de Reims and Ambonnay, plus a small vineyard in the Marne Valley - Mardeuil. The soils are chalky and the wines produce wines with minerality and clarity.
A defining characteristic of De Sousa Champagne are "Vielles Vignes" or "old-vine viticulture". The vineyards are ploughed traditionally by horse and some of the oldest vines go back to the early 1930's. They use full malolactic fermentation, extended lees ageing and ageing of reserve wines in barrel. Ericks' winemaking philosophy supports later ripening which allows the vines to benefit from the mineral-rich soils. This interaction enables the champagne to develop a palate profile that has abundance and purity and in our view, a remarkable length and finish compared to other champagnes.
More About House De Sousa
House De Sousa experienced quite a lot of turmoil since their beginning in the early 1930s.
This house has been in the De Sousa family for 3 generations and founding father Manuel endured an significant amount of grief before planting the first vines that would later grow into the grapes for their signature fine tasting champagne that is now enjoyed in various countries. Manuel fought in Verdun and died of gas in 1929 leaving behind his widow to take care of the four second-generation house members. During five years of viticultural crisis, the family suffered the loss of the house’s maternal father and Erick’s father became a prisoner of war during the Second World War.
It is always inspiring to see champagne houses achieve success despite suffering setback after setback and the rich history of House De Sousa makes them a very welcome guest at Emperor Champagne.
