They produce an excellent range of champagne at their state-of-the-art facility, from their award-winning Brut right through to their Prestige Cuvée – Cuvée Charles, in honour of their founder Charles Collin who was the man behind the grower vision back in the early 50’s.Over 90% of the vineyards are planted with Pinot noir, the remainder being planted with chardonnay. This is reflected in the range with the wines showing purity, expression and finesse. The good news is that there aren't any less bubbles, instead, the approach of the bubble on the palate is more delicate which makes them especially suited to pairing with food. At a loss with what to do, the story goes, a very famous biscuit company called Huntley \u0026amp; Palmer, based in Berkshire, UK, inspired them. They were biscuit makers to the Royal family and received Royal warrants by Napoleon III. Apparently as many imports were restricted during the war back in the 1940's, the people of Reims or Remois as they are referred to were prepared to pay more for a packet of biscuits than a bottle of champagne! Les Prémices is a plot coming from 3.5 hectares of vines in Trigny (northwest of Reims) in the Massif de Saint Thierry area. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTrigny is situated just to the west of Saint Thierry and Merfy, where \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/emperorchampagne.com.au\/collections\/chartogne-taillet\"\u003eAlexandre Chartogne\u003c\/a\u003e is based, and east of Montigny sur Vesle, where \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/emperorchampagne.com.au\/collections\/vendors?q=Suenen\"\u003eAurélien Suenen\u003c\/a\u003e grows the fruit for his stunning La Grande Vigne cuvee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Egly vines span seven historic lieux-dits (or named sites) in the commune. Like the Domaine's \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/emperorchampagne.com.au\/products\/egly-ouriet-vignes-de-vrigny-premier-cru\"\u003eVrigny vines\u003c\/a\u003e, these have come to the Domaine via Annick Egly's (Francis's wife) side of the family. The return of the two Egly children, Charles and Clémence, to the Domaine has given Francis Egly the ability to begin producing from these plots, and this is the inaugural release.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Reflecting what is planted in the vineyards, Les Prémices is an equal blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier drawn from mature vines (on average, 40 years old) rooted in clay, sand and sandstone, over chalk bedrock - a soil typical of the Massif de St. Thierry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"A new wine in the Egly range, the NV Brut Les Prémices is a Chardonnay\/Pinot Noir\/Meunier blend from Trigny, all 2016 vintage. One difference here is that the wine was fermented and aged exclusively in tank. The wine spent 36 months on lees and was disgorged with two grams per litre in July 2020.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eAbout the house\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are few growers in champagne with the attention to detail and unashamed passion for producing wines of distinction. Egly-Ouriet (pronounced\u003cem\u003e Egg-lee Ou-ri-yay)\u003c\/em\u003e is based in the grand cru village of Ambonnay, famed for its pinot noir fruit. It is run by the skillful, Francis Egly who practices biodynamic and organic principals in his vineyards which span, Bouzy and Verzenay. Francis makes up a handful of highly talented and terroir-driven producers along with the likes of Anselme Selosse, Larmandier-Bernier and Vouette et Sorbée. These are wines first and he produces deep, powerful and intense styles of champagne. His minimum ageing is around 48-60 months (as declared on his informative back label) for his non-vintage wines, allowing time to express the inner strength and purity.
