Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 2007

Prestige 2007

$390.00

- A Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs is rare

- Only first press wine (the ‘cuvée’) is used to give it an absolute guarantee of quality.

- 98/100 by Tyson Stelzer who says "Turn down the lights and the music and pour it for the one you love most."

This great 2007 vintage lives up to all expectations as soon as you open the bottle. It is a moment to treasure.

That typical Chardonnay colour is there in all its sparkling, golden glory with shimmers of green coating the constant stream of fine, delicate bubbles.

It has a fine and delicate nose which combines white blossom and a certain minerality with general overtones of Anjou light pear and golden raisins. Subtle hints of aniseed and smoky flavours follow this suggestion of fruit.

The taste is vibrant, with a combination of lemon and saltiness. This is immediately followed by a sensation of complex, yet mellow freshness creating the perfect balance between ripeness and a full-rounded flavour. It is rounded off by a long-lasting, crisp finish with hints of salted butter.

This elegant wine lives up to its reputation with its freshness, strength, minerality and mellow fruitiness. Its freshness encapsulates a certain moment in time and promises interesting cellaring potential

Suggested serving temperature for this wine and other vintage wines would be around 10-12 degrees Celsius. You will also discover more of the wine by doing this.

100% grand cru Côte des Blancs chardonnay; 60% Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the pillars of Comtes, for structure and finesse, then Chouilly for body and strength, Oger and a little less than 10% Cramant; 5% from Chouilly aged (not fermented) for 6 months in young oak barrels (new, with one-third renewed each year) to add body and subtle burnt-vanilla and coconut character; 9g/L dosage

Rich, ethereal and mineral with lemon curd and biscuity notes. Heaven. We love this champagne with a seafood risotto and a squeeze of fresh lemon and a sprinkling of parmesan to finish!

Reviews

98/100

"After the might of 2005 and 2006, there is a pretty elegance, exacting purity and beguiling freshness to 2007 that I find thrillingly compelling, and it’s captured in pinpoint detail in this enchanting Comtes.

The theme of radiant freshness of lemon blossom and fragrant finesse of apple of its first release two years ago has been upheld, deepened into delightful notes of brioche, marzipan, nougat, vanilla cream and almond. The grilled-toast reduction of chardonnay presents a delightfully complexing nuance, as does the creamy texture of lees age, both amplified by the toasty, biscuity, nutty touch of a little barrel maturation.

The chalk mineral signature of Comtes rumbles magnificently with the ancient geology of the finest grand crus of the Côte des Blancs. Still pale and bright straw in hue with a green tint at 12 years of age, this is my style of Comtes. In line and length, it is pristine, determined, undeviating and captivating.

It upholds an air of eloquent confidence, effortless harmony and graceful beauty. Turn down the lights and the music and pour it for the one you love most."

Tyson Stelzer, 2020-21 The Champagne Guide

This is a step up from the linear and fresh 2006. It shows subtle depth and power with a dense block of vivid fruit that's highlighted with lemon zest, green apples and hints of white peaches. Just the right amount of praline and nuts on the nose. Fine and tight bead give the Champagne a luxurious mouthfeel. One for now or the cellar. Drink or hold. James Suckling

Tiny bead. Hugely aromatic and super-tense but expressive too. Very much a Blanc de Blancs and very fine indeed. Wonderful aperitif. Massive acidity but the Bose compensates for it. Green fruits and great finesse. - Jancis Robinson
