Pol Roger Extra Cuvée de Réserve Vintage 1996

Blanc de Blancs 1996

$245.00

- An exceptional cuvée from of the Grandes Marques in Champagne.

If kept and treated properly, this cuvée will blossom beautifully with age.

- This is a 100% Blanc de blancs sourced with the finest Grand and Premier Cru's.

One of the best vintages of the century. The year 1996 was full of contrasts and the summer changeable, with the wetter periods never quite making up for the earlier water deficit. Eventually, in the month before grape-picking, it was as much the spells of hot weather as the influence of north-easterly winds that led to the original maturity of the vintage.

This is a rich, vinous champagne, with a full, creamy mouthfeel and savoury, meaty flavours of mushrooms, toast and pan juices. There's complexity everywhere you turn, and the citrussy finish lasts forever. Youthful and linear on the nose, it comes across the same on the palate, although it does broaden and soften in the middle, revealing slightly nutty fruit and baked lemon with a tangy citrus character. Lightly honeyed and maturing.

If it is good enough for her Majesty the Queen to drink every evening, then this it is good enough for us. Pol Roger is of the few champagne houses that have rightfully earned the British coat of arms to adorn every bottle and after all, it’s not just a favourite with the Royal Family but most of Britain, who know good champagne from the average. This medium-sized, family owned treasure of the Champagne region is the epitome of quality and consistency. With deep cool cellars, this maison leaves their cuvées ageing for far longer than most of their counterparts allowing the development of very fine and tiny bubbles. This creates a silky texture on the palate with subtle toasty notes that are the hallmark of excellent champagne. If ever in doubt, buy Pol Roger.
