Mareuil-Sur-Aÿ

What to expect

'Mareuil-sur-Ay' single plot cuvée offers the most precise expression of this centuries-old Premier Cru terroir planted mainly to Pinot Noir.

On tasting, the wine features a full and generous palate with wonderful notes of citrus and green apple, with a long, spicy finish offering notes of pepper and cumin. On the nose there is beautiful fruit with notes of red berries, peaches and citrus. On being aerated it reveals aromas of pastries, almond and confit lemon.

The blend consists of 100% pinot noirs from the village of Mareuil-sur-Ay and the House's historic terroir. First press juice of exclusively Premier Cru grapes from the heart of the Champagne wine-growing area. The 2008 vintage comprises blends from the Valofroy and Dessus des Goisses plots.

Charles Philipponnat

About the house

One of the most underrated champagnes in our humble opinion. Philipponnat is a house of outstanding quality from their entry level Royale Reserve Brut all the way through to their iconic Clos des Goisses Vintages. This premium producer picks fruit with maximum ripeness and focus on pinot noir fruit with power. All this ripeness is balanced with a long, cool fermentation and some wines being blocked from malo-lactic fermentation, whilst being fermented in oak barrels. Careful blending of base wines complete the work of art on non-vintage cuvees with approximately 30% of reserve wines being added.

Reserve wines are aged in a perpetual Solera system with new wines being added to older wines every year, continuously adding more complexity and depth to young cuvees.

The cuvée subtly complements shellfish and bisque sauces. White meat, soft cheeses and game birds served with cranberries would match well with this wine.
