What to expect

When it came to designing this Cristal Jeroboam, all I could think of was the light of the wine protected in a clear bottle that was imposing due to its size. No shadows on the bottle, only reflections from a “sun” From this idea emerged that of a delicate lattice like a jewel against the skin. Medallion links encasing the surface of the glass to create a precious, unique setting for each movement.

Philippo Di Méo - Jeweller

"Roederer’s 2002 Cristal is still in its infant, fresh stage. Subtle notes of pears, flowers, spices, mint, minerals and oak are woven into a cashmere-like frame of extraordinary grace and elegance. This beautifully-sculpted Champagne possesses notable clarity but with the additional depth of fruit that is characteristic of this vintage. It is a gorgeous, seductive Cristal of the highest level. In 2002, Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay with 10 grams of dosage. 20% of the wine was fermented in oak. This is Lot : L046394L100108. This was bottled in 2003 and disgorged in June 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2032.

Antonio Galloni

"All the exceptional characteristics of the 2002 vintage have literally been captured in this 2002 Cristal, which is generous and lush, revealing perfect balance between concentration and finesse, freshness and vinosity,
intensity and refinement."

— Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Cellar Master

Technical details

"60% pinot noir, 40% chardonnay; a pool of 50 hectares of vines averaging 42 years of age on the most chalky mid-slopes, yielding 50% less than the appellation; 60% biodynamic vineyards, with a goal of 100% by 2020; 16% fermented in 60-hL casks with bâtonnage for power, vinosity and a touch of spice and vanilla complexity; no malolactic fermentation; 8.5g/L dosage; typically 150,000–300,000 bottles"

About the house

About the house

How its Crafted

This house has serious pedigree and a long history of making outstanding wines. Roederer is still family owned and run and has a significant land holding of over 230 hectares allowing them to supply 70% of their grape requirements with excellent fruit. We are impressed by Louis Roederer’s increasing commitment to exploring biodynamics, both with treatment of their vast vineyard holdings plus the recent acquisition of a 15 hectare biodynamic parcel from Leclerc Briant. A relatively small 3 million bottles per annum of production are exported, largely to the USA.

How its Crafted

Highly technical prowess based on advanced knowhow inspired by the greatest traditions of jewellery, Roederer’s emblematic medallion is composed of a light, protective 24-carat latticework. The 2002 cuvée is a jewel, revealing its many facets in the shimmering reflections from this sensual, timeless, powdered gold armour. Each medallion bottle is 100% hand-crafted • Four days of work • Two master goldsmiths • Twelve different trades • Seven hundred metres of brass tape dipped in 24 carat gold • Five hundred and eight silver-weld points • Just ONE special edition 2002 Jeroboam shipped to Australia.
