What to expect

"De Nonancourt’s vision was to produce a multi-vintage prestige cuvée able to maintain consistent quality. This is achieved by blending only grand cru fruit from the best crus in the finest years declared by Laurent-Perrier. The blend places it among the oldest champagnes on the shelves. Sadly, the consumer is oblivious to all this, as the bottle gives no clue to either its disgorgement date or its splendid maturity. Despite a huge internal debate, the house refuses to budge on this, and declines to disclose base vintages even on my request. This makes managing collections a challenge, which is a shame, as Grand Siècle ages magnificently, long beyond its release.

Even in its grand maturity, this wine displays great poise and definition. Crunchy grapefruit and nashi pear are accented with an enticing reductive note of gun int. It simultaneously celebrates long lees age in layers of buttered toast, vanilla nougat and a creamy, silky texture amidst mineral-driven structure. It closes with excellent persistence, marked by subtle phenolic bitterness."

Food suggestion

Quite often people do not realise why they like a certain champagne brand. Some houses focus on the pinot noir grape in their champagnes which provides big, round and powerful cuvées and some houses focus on chardonnay, which provides more mineral drive, citrus and elegance. If you prefer the latter, then perhaps consider a bottle of Laurent-Perrier as your 'go-to' entertaining wine. This maison has a serious history but over the last 100 years has had a long line of influential women at its helm (Mathilde Emilie Perrier in 1812 and later in 1938 Marie-Louise Lanson de Nonancourt), and we cannot help but think that this has influenced the style – graceful, elegant and sophisticated. Of the larger maisons in champagne this is more subtle and understated in its profile. This may be to your preference and it is an affordable champagne label.

Food suggestion

Being a high quality wine this would pair with a wide range of dishes, particularly surf & turf. Ideally some pan-fried scallops with black truffle (truffle oil if you can't source truffle).
