What to expect

If you've never come across this producer, listen up! The Influence is the flagship cuvee of the domaine and we love it's velvety texture, smoky resonance and a moreishness that resembles the likes of the mighty Krug Grande Cuvée. Perhaps it's the deft use of oak, which these guys specialise in or the way in which they blend? What we know is that every time we open one of these, it gets better as you sip through the bottle. It's simple. Get some.

"Light yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of peach nectar, honey, buttered toast and smoky oak. Sappy, chewy and expansive on the palate, with ripe, spice-accented orchard and pit fruit flavors braced by juicy acidity. Reminds me a lot of a top-notch Meursault. Finishes broad, smoky and very long, with firm mineral cut and suave floral character." - Vinous

Technical details

The varietal blend is 30% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier, and 15% Chardonnay. The final blend contains 15% of reserve wines. As is the case with all of their wines, it is aged in oak and the wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation. About 30% of the barrels are less than 4 years with the rest being over 5 years old. The wine is aged for 7 years in bottle on its lees. Dosage is 5g/L.

A new grower in Hermonville – north of Reims in Massif Saint Thierry. This area is the most northerly part of the Champagne region. Frédéric and Rodolphe look after 8 hectares of vines mainly in Hermonville. Traditionally they sold all their grapes to the big houses, but in 2005 they decided to start their own business. Frédéric (standing left) spent some time with Anselme Selosse and no doubt this has had a profound impact on his philosophy towards wine making. All the wines are fermented and aged in barrel with long ageing and malolactic fermentation is blocked for all the cuvées. About 70% of barrels are 5 years or older. Rodolphe and Frédéric have some interesting terroirs to work with. The upper hills are covered in sand-loam soil while the lower areas are loam, clay and sand. These well-draining soils contain high levels of minerals. Current production is about 15,000 bottles per year and slowly increasing.
