What to expect

"From a single lieu-dit, ‘Les Crayères’, planted in shallow soils in 1946, this warm amphitheatre high up the Ambonnay slope epitomises the golden sunlight, glowing warmth and magnificent mineral expression of Egly-Ouriet. Hedonistic aromas of black cherries, plum pie and violets erupt in grand cru red Burgundy proportions, backed with notes of dark chocolate and exotic spice. In sheer volume, depth and persistence, this cuvée pushes champagne into another world.

Yet, crucially and mesmerisingly, it is never for a moment heavy or blowsy, pulled exactingly into tight line by gorgeous, bright yet perfectly ripe and generous acidity. With barely a foot of topsoil before the chalk, the mineral character of this hallowed site speaks articulately in softly salty tones that will stir the depths of your soul."

Tyson Stelzer - The Champagne Guide 2018-2019

About the house

Food Suggestion

There are few growers in champagne with the attention to detail and unashamed passion for producing wines of distinction. Egly Ouriet pronounced (Egg-lee Ou-ri-yay) is based in the grand cru village of Ambonnay, famed for its pinot noir fruit. It is run by the skillful, Francis Egly who practices biodynamic and organic principals in his vineyards which span, Bouzy and Verzenay. Francis makes up a handful of highly talented and terroir-driven producers along with the likes of Anselme Selosse, Larmandier-Bernier and Vouette et Sorbée. These are wines first and he produces deep, powerful and intense styles of champagne. His minimum ageing is around 48-60 months (as declared on his informative back label) for his non-vintage wines, allowing time to express the inner strength and purity. If you’ve never heard of Egly Ouriet before, you are in for a treat. “Few producers can equal Francis Egly in skill and experience, and larger houses cannot hope to emulate the cultivation norms…” Michel Bettane, The World's Greatest Wines.

Food Suggestion

The mind conjures all sorts of flavours, fruits, meats with this style of wine. It moves in the general direction of bird and game, specifically crispy or roast duck with cooked cherries, rosemary and cinnamon to add some further dimension. Another favourite with exceptional Blanc de Noirs is Venison seared and served medium rare with roast beetroot, spiced carrots and crispy potatoes.
