Bollinger PN, made exclusively from Pinot Noir, has been crafted by the House to express its unique vision of this specific grape variety. This new VZ16 edition explores the unique interpretation of Pinot Noir from Verzenay 2016. Pinot Noir from Verzenay brings a certain depth; it brings an elegance as well as a tension and finishes with a hint of salt reminiscent of its chalky terroirs.

PN VZ15 was a wine focused on elegance and vivacity whereas PN VZ16 is more focused on generosity and delicacy. This is mainly due to the ripeness of the grapes. 2016 was particularly favourable for Pinots Noirs from the Montagne de Reims, particularly in the Verzenay vineyards.

Please note this product will be shipped from August 10 due to delays in Sydney.

The House generally uses several vessels to accentuate its Pinot Noir wines: steel, wood, and sealing reserve magnums with a cork. This cuvée has harnessed all of Bollinger’s know-how, with the aim of creating a 100% Pinot Noir champagne with a unique taste. PN is a blend of both tank and wood vinified wines, as well as a blend of wines of the year and reserve wines. Vinification is in a mixture of 50% stainless steel and 50% oak, the latter in 10-year-old Burgundy barrels bought from Burgundy house Chanson and the wines spend some six months after fermentation in contact with the fine lees in order to bring about greater roundness and density.

Bollinger remain quite possibly one of the most famous family-owned champagne houses of all. Bollinger are well known for their dominance of the powerful and expressive pinot noir from Aÿ where they were founded, their use of magnums for production of all their wines and a traditional wine making style incorporating fermentation in oak barrels from which they have never deviated. They still have their own in-house cooper who makes and manages their stock of some 3,500 barrels! That equates to about 1 million bottles being fermented in barrel - that is the largest (along with Krug) of any other producer in the region. Currently Bollinger own some 164 hectares in some of the best sites across Champagne.

The 'PN Project' was a contest set by Chef de Caves Gilles Descôtes in the Bollinger winemaking team to come up with the best expression of pinot noir from a single village. All four winemakers Gilles Descôtes, Denis Bunner, Patrick Laforest and Guillaume Gallois set off in 2015 to work their magic.

After many years and blind tastings, the winning expression was by Gilles Descôtes with the Grand Cru village of 'Verzenay' making its presence known. The contenders were from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Aÿ. Going forward each year will be judged and tasted blind, with the best expression being selected for the next release.

Reviews

"PN VZ15 was disgorged in November 2019 after nearly 4 years on the lees with a dosage of seven grams per litre. The aromas are immediately seductive, showing freshness allied to a sweet praline and floral clove pinks note. This intensity of aroma is followed in the taste by an effortlessly creamy, melt-in-the-mouth mousse that seems to float before spreading and dissolving satisfyingly on the tongue in a wave of powerful flavours. This textured richness is undercut by a steely blade of freshness with a salinity that keeps you salivating. This is the real deal. (96 points)" - Anthony Rose - The Real Review
