What to expect

This is the latest vintage 2009 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut from Alfred Gratien and the result is pretty stunning. Where the 2007 was slightly dense and a little chewy on the palate, this is more of a contrast being fresher despite the same time in the cellar.

It has a clear, fresh chalky aroma followed by ripe citrus fruit and brioche. On the palate, this is deep, rich and complex. The fresh fruit follows through with that Grand Cru mineral structure and freshness making itself present. This is really gorgeous and indicates immense ageing potential.

Technical details

Avize and Cramant; fermented and aged 6 months in oak barrels; aged 8 years on lees with no malolactic fermentation and a reasonable 8g/l dosage

Food Suggestion

Based in Epernay, Alfred Gratien are certainly more led towards the traditional approach to champagne production winemaking being; no malo-lactic fermentation (to preserve malic acidity) aged under cork, long ageing (oxidative style) and oak fermentation.

Food Suggestion

Serve this fresh but full bodied blanc de blancs with a seafood marinara pasta with fresh prawns and scallops and serve with a sprinkling of sea salt.
