What to expect
“Egly's 2009 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is a 100% Ambonnay blend of Pinot Noir (70%) and Chardonnay (30%). Fermented in Burgundian barrels for eight months and disgorged in April 2018 with two grams of dosage, this cuvée offers a very fine, bright, pure, finessed and elegant bouquet with some toffee flavors. On the palate, this is a lovely round, rich, intense yet pure, refined and elegant, fresh and fruity 2009. It's not heavy or massive at all and isn't very challenging either. It delivers great drinking pleasure and lots of fruit and iodine flavors to your palate, and these do remain. It's a great and really delicious 2009 vintage Champagne that drinks beautifully today and will continue to do so for at least the next 10 to 15 years.” 95 points, Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate #238, September 2018
Technical details:
This is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from 40-year-old vines in Ambonnay, aged completely in barrel, no malo and virtually no dosage. It is a seductive, layered, yet powerful expression of Ambonnay and, with the Blanc de Noirs, represents one of the very finest wines of the Montagne de Reims Grand Cru area. The 2009 is a blinder that is not to be missed. Disg. July 2018

Food Suggestion
There are few growers in champagne with the attention to detail and unashamed passion for producing wines of distinction. Egly-Ouriet (pronounced Egg-lee Ou-ri-yay) is based in the grand cru village of Ambonnay, famed for its pinot noir fruit. It is run by the skillful, Francis Egly who practices biodynamic and organic principals in his vineyards which span, Bouzy and Verzenay. Francis makes up a handful of highly talented and terroir-driven producers along with the likes of Anselme Selosse, Larmandier-Bernier and Vouette et Sorbée. These are wines first and he produces deep, powerful and intense styles of champagne. His minimum ageing is around 48-60 months (as declared on his informative back label) for his non-vintage wines, allowing time to express the inner strength and purity. If you’ve never heard of Egly-Ouriet before, you are in for a treat. “Few producers can equal Francis Egly in skill and experience, and larger houses cannot hope to emulate the cultivation norms…” Michel Bettane, The World's Greatest Wines.

Perhaps an entree of Foie Gras Patê-style followed by Grilled Lobster tails with butter and herb sauce. No need to be shy, the wine certainly isn't.
