Based across two sites in Fontette and Essoyes, which is coincidentally also the home of the famous impressionist Auguste Renoir. They produce an excellent range of champagne at their state-of-the-art facility, from their award-winning Brut right through to their Prestige Cuvée – Cuvée Charles, in honour of their founder Charles Collin who was the man behind the grower vision back in the early 50’s.Over 90% of the vineyards are planted with Pinot noir, the remainder being planted with chardonnay. This is reflected in the range with the wines showing purity, expression and finesse. Essentially, the Laurent-Perrier team select the parcels of fruit which exhibit the ripest parcels and lowest acidity to find natures harmony. This wine was launched in 1981 and for the team at Emperor, this stands as a great illustration of how to achieve great expression from the vineyards without masking it with sugar. This is a blend of 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot noir. Today, this cuvée is champagne’s best-selling brut nature, in a well-balanced and highly strung apéritif style. Clean nashi pear, lemon and grapefruit are accented, with subtle flinty reductive notes and almond meal complexity beginning to build in older disgorgements. The house started out making still red wines in the former winemaking capital of Champagne, Aÿ and for many years resisted the sweeping sensation of making sparkling wine. The house to this day is focused on making it wine first before a champagne. This is in direct contrast to other houses that make acidic base wines purely for the purpose of making champagne. One of the key winemaking techniques is the absence of malo-lactic fermentation. This preserves the pristine nature of the fruit and highlights its lively acidity and bracing energy. The wines therefore, benefit from an extended time in the cellar to gain their full potential. They would certainly have the potential to develop in yours. We have been impressed by all the cuvées, which recently arrived in Australia (September 2017) and the Grande Reserve Brut is an outstanding entry level champagne for a classy producer.

Food Suggestion

This is a rich, complex yet fresh and vibrant wine, serve with pork and pistachio terrine or a pâte with fresh raspberries and red apple. Father and Vigneron Erick De Sousa has a Portuguese background and practices Biodynamic viticulture. The family runs just over 9 hectares, most of which in Avize but also in the Montagne de Reims and Ambonnay, also a small vineyard in the Marne Valley - Mardeuil. The main characteristics of De Sousa Champagne are; *'Vieilles Vignes' or old-vine viticulture. *The vineyards are ploughed traditionally by horse and some of the oldest vines go back to the early 1930's. *Full malolactic fermentation. *Extended lees ageing. *Ageing of reserve wines in barrel. Ericks' winemaking philosophy supports later ripening which allows the vines to benefit from the mineral-rich soils. Producer Jerome Dehours is a member of the 'Les Artisans du Champagne', which brings together high quality, mostly single estate champagne producers for an annual tasting. They were biscuit makers to the Royal family and received Royal warrants by Napoleon III. Apparently as many imports were restricted during the war back in the 1940's, the people of Reims or Remois as they are referred to were prepared to pay more for a packet of biscuits than a bottle of champagne! This town is considered somewhat of an oddity, as it is primarily a chardonnay village amidst a mountain of pinot noir. Why is this special? Well the chardonnay used by Margaine in Villers Marmery is specific to this area and cannot be found anywhere else in champagne. This immediately stands out as an identity that Arnaud wants to preserve which is present in the Margaine cuvées. His approach to making his champagne is to assess each year as it presents itself as opposed to a pre-determined recipe. Using a prescribed approach is restrictive to the true nature of the wine. He is a proponent of blocking malolactic fermentation, as he wants to preserve what he describes as ‘fruit freshness’ and not just acidity. Mathilde is familiar with the Australian market and landscape after spending a considerable period of time here in 2016 learning about her market. Young and extremely passionate Julien Fourrier has taken over the wine making reins and is producing some quality cuvees. This is truly a family affair and a great example of a grower champagne from the south who is marking their mark globally.
