They called themselves 'Société des Grands Crus de la Champagne' because at the time, only growers that owned grand cru vineyards could join. Between them, they had grand cru vineyards in the areas of the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims and they banded together as they were seeking to make better wines than they could achieve separately. So how did the name come about? Well this truly is an interesting story and through our research we discovered some interesting facts. The founders at first tried to create an acronym using their initials to form a name, which you can imagine was frustrating and ended nowhere. At a loss with what to do, the story goes, a very famous biscuit company called Huntley & Palmer, based in Berkshire, UK, inspired them. They were biscuit makers to the Royal family and received Royal warrants by Napoleon III. Apparently as many imports were restricted during the war back in the 1940's, the people of Reims or Remois as they are referred to were prepared to pay more for a packet of biscuits than a bottle of champagne! Lead by enigmatic winemaker Richard Geoffroy, he has continued to prove that he is a force to be reckoned with and has been turning out great vintages and even far more superlative second release cuvées in the P2 range. Geoffroy believes that champagnes age in plenitudes. This super talented winemaker has a theory that champagnes in the wine-makers cellars head off on a period of change and development then reach a plateau before heading off on another journey of increased complexity and development. As such, great vintages of Dom Pérignon are held back in the cellar with the yeast inside the bottle to allow the wine to take on another stratosphere of complexity and depth. Enter P2 - a wine that must be enjoyed at least once in your lifetime and more if you can justify it!

Journalist review

"At 30%, this represents one of the highest doses of Pinot noir red wine in a blended champagne rosé, up from 17-20% in the past, in line with Geoffroy's mandate to create more substantial style. One year after release it upheld tamarillo, blood orange, rose hip, pomegranate and strawberry exuberance. But in more recent tastings, two years after release, its hue has deepened to a medium crimson copper and its primary fruits have evolved to a more secondary and savoury demeanour of toast, mixed spices, liquorice and pipe smoke. The reductive style of the house speaks in flinty complexity. As fruit fades, the textural grip and bitterness of phenolic structure and not insubstantial Pinot noir tannins are now more prominent on the finish, declaring that it has past its finest days. And, my goodness, it continues to radiate more than its quota of sheer joy! It still glows in elegantly medium-straw hues, impressively bright for 11 years of age. Its enticing gunflint reduction notes still lead out, carrying with them a wonderfully complex yet compact and elegant array of succulent yellow stone fruits, now beginning to show the complexity of glacé pear, with rising notes of wood smoke and buttered toast. Roederer is still family owned and run and has a significant land holding of over 230 hectares allowing them to supply 70% of their grape requirements with excellent fruit. We are impressed by Louis Roederer’s increasing commitment to exploring biodynamics both with treatment of their vast vineyard holdings plus the recent acquisition of a 15 hectare biodynamic parcel from Leclerc Briant. A relatively small 3 million bottles per annum of production are exported, largely to the USA.

Journalist Review

"A masterful presentation of impeccably ripe fruit of intricate balance and abundant appeal: a dependable bargain in the non-vintage champagne stakes. It's on the rise in its new, dedicated facility.

Until the 2009 base, Brut Premier reserves came from a solera, in Jean-Baptiste Lecaillons view, lacking focus and 'showing too much character of having been made in the cellar.' The solera is now no more, bringing greater focus, more precise mineral articulation and greater emphasis on ripe fruit.

Dosage was sensibly dropped from 10-11g/L to 9.5 g/L. The result in 2010 is a wonderful accord between pretty lemon blossom, apple and pear fruit, the spicy, toasty, nutmeg allure of barrel-fermentation and bottle age, and the racy freshness of malic acidity. It's at once impeccably fresh and enticingly complex, with a long finish of soft chalk minerality."

Tyson Stelzer - The Champagne Guide 2016-2017
"}
